in 2014, i bought 2 years of time; in 2016, i bought another 3 years. in that time, i found my first-hand connection to the universe, the original source. my purpose found me, and i connected with my why. :: the babyfoot lake trail is one of the places i stood in a new self and felt, deeply. connected. and, safe. surrounded only by natural beauty and other non-human animals. :: the trail is in cave junction, oregon, where i moved to write in the trees. two weeks in, the world shifted on its axis, and i just about fell off. still, i was a city girl living in big nature for the first time, and it was magical. :: it was also eye-opening and deeply troubling, and nothing like the cabin porn fantasy i blindly rode out of town. :: ultimately, the 19 months in southern oregon fundamentally changed me as a white human being.

babyfoot lake trail :: eight dollar mountain :: cave junction, oregon

soft white cold light

fragile flakes

boots break a

creamy crystalline crust

iced pea gravel

crunches under treads

face fingers eyes

frozen numb wonder

on the trail

to babyfoot lake

first freeze, first snow

frozen fog

and freezing flowers

iced falls

and sugarcoated limbs

shiny sculpted trees

and fractal puddle art

a sun

blasts the fog

with yellow-white fire

reflecting colorlight

cools the sun’s rising heat

a lake

an ice moat

crystallizes around

an underwater snag

and

evap blows up

the skirts of the

hard blue sky

while tiny

ballooning balls

of frost

create lilliputian explosions

of red soil

magic
